But in this case the Doctors, as we said at the time, were partially, if not altogether at fault, It was not the rank vegetation so much as the absence of those medical comforts, for the want of whien the China expedition of 1840-1and 2 suffered so frightfully. What the men wanted was stimulating nourishment;_ instead of which, directly a soldier complained, tue surgeon of the Regiment stopped his rum, and gave him neithe wine nor peppermint in lieu of it. That we say was, as we bel lieve, the chief cause of the great mortality in garrison in 1843. with civilians however, this would not serve for a reason; and it will be useful in this place to introduce Dr. Dill's opinion of the causes of fever in the Colony, as given in a paper read in 1845 before the then existing but now long de- funct China Medico Chirurgical Society.

The great mortality which has taken place in the Island, calle londly for an izvestigation into the nature, causes, and treatment of the aisease. The lives of many hundreds of our countrymen are at stake, let us then discuss and agitate every point connected with the subject over and over again until we come to some ratíonal conclusion, and some method of obviatine and treating a malady which has exhibited here aŋ mortal a
